GB Women Beat Germany 3-0 at the Padel World Cup Finals in Doha

The GB padel women got their first win at the World Cup Finals in Doha on Wednesday, beating Germany 3-0. It came after heavy defeats to Brazil and Spain, so it was too late to reach the quarter finals. However, it means GB now play for places nine to 16, starting against Egypt today.

This is the first time the British women have been at the finals in five years, so a win of any kind is worth having.

How GB beat Germany

Victoria Nicholas and Chloe de la Mare got things going with a 6-4 6-0 win over Celina Ermann and Alissa Schmitz. De la Mare is only 16 and made her GB debut at the qualifiers in Madrid in September.

Then Catherine Rose and Aimee Gibson, the GB number one pair, beat Victoria Kurz and Milla Blaschke 6-2 6-2. Rose had missed the Brazil tie through illness, so it was good to see her back.

The last match was the tightest. Abigail Tordoff and Lisa Phillips lost the first set to Lena Plumer and Katharina Hering 6-2. They came back to win 2-6 6-4 6-4.

The GB padel World Cup group

GB were drawn in Group A with Spain, Brazil and Germany. Spain are the best team in the world, while Brazil are not far behind. Both beat GB 3-0, which was no great surprise. As a result, GB finished third in the group.

Before the event, Rose had said she wanted to play Spain or Argentina, to see where the team stands against the very best. She got her wish.

Who is in the GB padel World Cup squad
